Our puppies come to YOU

TRAINED, yes trained.
We feel you deserve a puppy ready to learn and become a part of your family. We understand the frustration of housebreaking  your new puppy, so we help you through the first year, teaching you how to housebreak.
We will be here anytime to assist your needs with your new puppy.
We can also offer additional training if you feel it necessary.
We will teach your new puppy house manners
and how to socialize with other pets and children.
We offer these service because we feel you and
your new bundle of joy deserve it
.

We offer you such high quality puppies simply because we are  responsible and knowledgeable in the breed .

I wanted to exceed the expectation of a breeder and offer our clients and  puppy's a head start on the
issues that are most often overlooked.

I am confident you will not find any other Toy Rat Terrier breeder offering trained puppies,
or giving you access to a trainer.

We do this to make the transition less stressful on you and your new puppy, after all it is about the puppy right.

We interview all applicants, many have not qualified, this is very simply because it must be the right fit for you and the puppy.

It is very important for the future owners to follow through with the training in order for the puppy to settle in and feel more comfortable in it's new environment.
The amount of socialization we give the puppies away from the other puppies and with human touch has much to do with how well you new puppy bonds and adjusts to it's new home.
Our puppies wine less, and crave human contact more, so there is less adjustment for them to leave their siblings

Please take the time to fill out our APPLICATION if you are interested in adopting from

5280 Toy Rat Terriers

We plan each litter carefully.

We have a limited number of  litters per year and can only guarantee puppies to clients with deposits and currently on the waiting list.
Our puppies are bred for conformation, size and color and temperament.

We take notice of the issues surrounding breeding , and want to be sure your puppy will never end up in a shelter, we do this by giving you what frustrates new puppy owners most, TRAINING.

Our puppies are raised in the house with human interaction.

The advantage of working at home raising Toy Rat Terriers is that I am here to imprint their minds in these critical first 8 weeks of life. You can never make up for lack of socialization at this stage.

We take each puppy out individually and begin handle and train them from day one.

When they go to their new homes, 5280 Toy Rat Terriers puppies have already began to learn commands such as  sit , walking on a leash, and much more.

we are available by phone or stop by and we will be happy to assist you with any concerns you may have with your new bundle of joy with training or socialization issues.

At 5280 Toy Rat Terriers our puppies  are Leash Trained, collar trained,

play ball, AND puppy play.

Some learn  fetch before the leave also!  We will also work on sounds , de-sentisthsing your puppy to loud, and obtrusive sounds , as well as every day sounds and activities.  We take your puppy for car rides, and teach it to walk over different surfaces. We also take time to teach your new puppy how to greet at the door. The extra steps and time involved means puppy will be more adjusted to be part of your family and home environment when they arrive.

The young puppies are constantly playing with small children and are already gaining the social skills needed to be a well rounded and integral part of your family.

Litter Training

Our puppies are litter trained and begin the process the day mom no longer takes care of the process herself.  All of my adult females are litter trained as well, teaching puppies, in the whelping box as well.

We do this by giving the puppies a designated place in the whelping box to GO, they catch on very easily and continue to make this their potty area.

The puppies learn to use it!
They potty as soon as they wake up. This keeps the play pen very sanitary.  And will be the foundation for your new puppy and you.

You will continue this process when you take puppy home, making house training MUCH easier.

Crate Training

We crate train our puppies starting at 5-6 weeks old. We do this by first leaving an open crate in the puppy play area.
They naturally go in it when they are sleepy.

We then  begin try to close the door for small periods of time time give the puppies the idea ,
right outside the door to the crate, we put a "litter box" ( with ABM).

Clean Living

Puppies who are kept clean in the whelping box or litter box, are animals that learn how to be clean, and strive to be clean.

It is very difficult to retrain a puppy not kept clean during this time , as I am sure many of you have already experienced, this is one of the most important  imprints, I as a breeder can make on your new puppy, and this is a priority for me.

Once this imprint is lost it can never be regained, unfortunately, I myself have experienced this too.

So when I decided to breed , I decided to never raise a puppy in an environment less than what I would offer to a infant itself.

You see I have very high standards for breeding I stand by, and for those reasons, I stand apart from any other breeder.

Feel free to stop by anytime and take a look for yourself.

Breeding Stock

We here at 5280 Toy Rat Terriers take pride in the puppies we produce.  So much pride, we keep our own puppies for our breeding program.  While out-crossing your kennel IS a must to ensure good quality bloodlines, keeping back your own stock is essential to a good breeding program as well. We choose only the best for breeding based on parentage, history, quality, and pedigree. What we look for goes beyond visual appearances, we want to ensure he/she will have the temperament and qualities we look for in our breeding program. We know if quality is important to us it is important to our clients as well.

What Color is your Dog?

I get many calls , a breeder has a dog, she said it was blue, it looks like a black dog, what colors is it?

Ok well Blue , colors of a dog are denoted by the color of the nose, blue dog , blue nose.

The only exception to the rule is in Charcoal , this color will have a darker color nose, looking black or dark blue, and dog will appear black and blue at times.

Chocolate dogs have chocolate/liver noses.

Fawn/Pearl -purple/violet

Black-black

Lemon-choc

These are just a few , if you have questions call

the same goes for brindle, merle and any off color dogs as well

How big will my Puppy Be?

This is a frequent question is get from callers.

The answer to this question is easy.

KNOW YOUR LINEAGE.

Breeding for Tiny Tots 5 lbs and under is much different from breeding Toys.  C-sections are NOT usual and should not be normal, Dams with C-sections should not be in a breeding program, all Dams in our breeding program are what are referred to as free whelpers, meaning they can deliver puppies free from C-sections.

C-Sections are  not healthy for a breeding Dam to continually undergo this procedure and can be very stressful for her, imagine when you or your family member has to have a Cesarean, it takes time to recover, dogs are no different.  We do not keep ANY Dams in or breeding program with a history of C-sections, nor do we breed off-spring from Dams with a history of C-sections , as they tend to carry their Dams history for the same type of delivery's.

Essentially the reason for breeding a larger female to a smaller male, if you have the right LINEAGE, you get the right results, every time.

Many will claim to be able to and many will claim to be able to just throw small in general, however  you get what you pay for. Ask for PROOF.

Visit in person, take a look at their breeding stock.

My rule of thumb is if you can not go back AT LEAST 5 generations on one side TINY you are not going to get anything small or Tiny out of those parents , and you just have a runt breeding.

Any breeder can purchase a runt and breed it, this will not produce the tiny gene, or give you tiny or small puppies, you need the tiny tot gene in order to produce tiny tots or smaller puppies.

No breeder can guarantee how big or small your puppy will be full grown, however any seasoned breeder will KNOW their lines and be able to offer you some estimate of an idea of what size your puppy will be.

A few Tips

1. Interview your breeder well

2. What is their knowledge in the breed?

3. How knowledgeable are in their lineage?

4. How friendlily are they? Did they return your calls / emails?

5. Were they professional ? Keep in mind this is someone you will want to feel comfortable asking questions to, do you have a good rapport?

6. What are their credentials? Do they sit on any Boards of any kind? have they ever? What is their  commitment to the breed?

7. If you have issues with your transaction, who can you report this to? What do they have to loose?

These are all importation questions to ask a breeder, and to ask

 Take a look
other breeds
have been established for longer , it's true. However the Rat Terrier is lesser known , it is one of the sweetest breeds. I like to say it like a cat in a dogs body, my dogs like to crawl under the covers to get warm.  Rat terriers are not known to be nippy or barky , they like to greet a new guest at the door , and once they have greeted they are friendly with most everyone they meet. They are exceptionally well adaptive to any environment, and love most to be loved and  with you to receive your attention and in reciprocate with adoration.

Our breed is only prone to 1, yes only one genetic health issue ,
luxating patellas,( What is a luxating patella?

The patella, or knee cap, should be located in the center of the knee joint. The term "luxating" means out of place or dislocated. Therefore, a luxating patella is a knee cap that moves out of its normal location).and we take careful observation to breed it out of our lines, checking each and every puppy very carefully to be sure we are breeding sound quality puppies that will be healthy and happy as they grow into adults.

Are the sizes any different from breed to breed?  yes, they can range, just like the Rat terrier, for the most part, you will find a range of sizes in most breeds anymore from teacup, or tiny to, larger.

Are the colors different from breed to breed? Yes, colors vary from breed to breed
, as well as coat too.

Where did this little doggie come from?

History of the Toy Rat Terrier
By: Nancy Anderson

Prior to UKCI's acceptance the Rat Terrier was being developed all over England, Great Britain and the United States into the breed that it is today.

It's origin starts in England in the 1820's where they were crossing the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Black/Tan Manchester Terrier along with other breeds like the now extinct White Terrier in the hopes of achieving a superior varmint dog.

American Breeders however refined the Rat Terrier into the breed that it is today with crossing England's version of the Rat Terrier to Toy Foxes, Chihuahuas, Italian Greyhounds and Beagles.

UKCI (Universal Kennel Club International) was the first registry to recognize the Rat Terrier as a purebred and accept them as a recognized Purebred breed in 1936.

The Rat Terrier is a well known farm dog as far back as anybody can remember but their numbers started dwindling in the 1950's when modernization of farms turned more to chemical/poison varmint control thus the need for less varmint type dogs.

A few breeders still had small packs of these wonderful dogs but the gene pool was declining to very small numbers.  In an attempt to revitalize the dog and it's numbers the crossing of these dogs with the Toy Fox, Chihuahua, I.G. and  Beagle breeds was acceptable practice from the '70's until January 1, 1998 when UKCI officially refused to register any dog as a Rat Terrier that was not bred from 2 previously registered Rat Terriers.

The introduction of the Toy Fox, Chihuahua and Manchester Terrier into the bloodlines gave the smaller size that many desired for a smaller dog needed for hunting of small prey.

The Rat Terrier is a tenacious squirrel dog and some say can do the job of finding, killing, retrieving and bringing home the kill all by themselves.
The introduction of the Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound gave the breed the multitude of colors that it enjoys today including the merle pattern.
The introduction of the beagle was done to hone hunting instincts but served little other purpose.
It only takes watching this vivacious little dog in it's determined attempt to retrieve it's prey to see that it's hunting instincts are very much intact today.

A rat stands little if any chance against a determined Rat Terrier of any size.

This little dog may have started out being developed as a small type hunting dog but it has evolved into a dog of many purposes. It is as at home in somebody's bed as it is in the woods. It is as happy in somebody's lap as it is in the back yard. It's heart may be small in comparison to larger breeds but NO dog can be any more loyal.

recognized breed for registration and each Registry carries their own set of standards according to their breed clubs standards.

Registries that are most prevalent in promoting the Rat Terrier as a purebred are ACR (American Canine Registry), UKCI (Universal Kennel Club), APRI (America's Pet Registry Inc.) and UKC (United Kennel Club).
Other registries do register the Rat Terrier as a breed but their registration policies are less stringent than the ones above therefore making me question the PUREBRED status of such puppies/dogs.
There was rumor in 2001 that AKC (American Kennel Club) was to accept Rat Terriers for foundation stock into their registry. This would be a happy/sad occasion for the Rat Terrier as a breed. It would mean that one of the largest registries in the world has finally accepted the Rat Terrier as a breed probably due to it's increasing large number of breeders and pups being produced but it could also mean the loss of health of our beloved Rat Terrier. Show Breeders have a tendency to continually breed back to related dogs which can give them a superior sho

The Rat Terrier made a huge come-back and gained the public's eye in the 1990's and with the popularity came the "WILL OF OTHERS" to change things to their own liking.

Breed standards that had served the Rat Terrier breed well for over 50 years started being scrutinized, argued over and changed.  One change was in the acceptable patterns.  Merle and Brindle became an overnight disqualification in some registries.

Colors and Patterns were hashed over from one end of the United States to the other and eventually the "POWERS THAT BE" got their way and most breed standards across the nation were changed to their will.  2 registries stand out for their courage and knowledge in not allowing a few to change the standard for us all and those 2 are ACR - American Canine Registry and APRI - American Pet Registry Inc.  who stood their ground and refused to eliminate things in the breed standard that was certain to once again reduce the Rat Terriers numbers and gene pool and without doubt would be unfair to the breeders who were already registering with them.

The UKCI adopted the National Rat Terrier Association's (NRTA) standard of the Rat Terrier and that is the standard that all UKCI registered Rat Terriers should be judged by.
The ACR adopted the Rat Terrier Club International standard of the Rat Terrier and that is the standard that all ACR registered Rat Terriers should be judged by.
Keep in mind here though that several registries now accept the Rat Terrier as
dog but can also give them less vigor, more health problems and will surely start to change the looks of the dog that we so love as it is now.   The rumor was indeed true and AKC now does FSS Foundation Stock Service of the Rat Terrier.  Once the database has been built to a sufficient number they will be recognized as a full AKC breed.

While the RTCA tries to make it seem that they were the official breed standard producers of an accepted breed standard that could be nothing further from the truth as UKCI did and does to this day have a recognized breed standard long before RTCA was even a dream.

Many try to accredit UKC (*UNITED) as being the first registry of Rat Terriers and again this is nothing but untruth.  UKCI (*UNIVERSAL) was the first REGISTRY to recognize and REGISTER the Rat Terrier.

A registry is nothing but a company who DOCUMENTS and ISSUES paperwork and that is EXACTLY what UKCI has been doing with the Rat Terriers since 1936 which is a far cry longer than UKC's acceptance and documentation of the breed in 1999.

Added to 2010 Jennifer Mason

In May 2010, International Dog Registry opened it's registry to the public. After years of Toy Rat Terriers and Tiny Tot Rat Terriers (teacups) not being accepted in the show ring, a group of breders  got together and decided our breed needed representation. We felt if our breed was just as beautiful , and just and well bred. As this has grown other breeds have come forward and admitted they too need representation.

Our dogs will have a place to be shown in all colors , and all sizes.

This is a registry for your Merle, your Brindle, your UNIQUE Coat Color.
All Breeds, sizes and colors not recognized by other registrations.
We will also be supporting the all dogs currently registered with other registries.
If your breed calls the color a fault, most likely we embrace it.

We are not here to remake any standard already out there, standards will remain the same,
coat colors are the only item ever up for debate in the community.
Conformation  standard is very important to maintain to keep the integrity of the breed, and  integrity as we move forward with a new registry.
Supporting new coat colors will be very touchy.  Some breeds have had new breeds introduced for the sake of color,
this is not the same breed of dog, this is a new breed, and will be recognized as such.
If this has happened with your breed, it will be a foundation stock registered dog.

Our stand on this matter is, we are not supporting new colors cropping up just for the purpose of  breeding dogs.
However there are several colors and breeds already recognized worldwide, we will recognize in this registry.

This registry will be offering SHOWING for all of these beautiful breeds through our registry, something most if none currently have.

However this will take time.

The Toy Rat Terrier is recognized, and documented on your registration paperwork by the following registry's.
NRTA, UKCI, APRI and CKC .
The Tiny Tot is recorded by these following registries
NRTA and IDR, UKCI keeps track of the smallest Rat Terrier born, it can be seen on their website, 5280 does not register UKCI, and does not participate in this, however we do happen to have the smallest Rat Rat Terrier ever born at 1.9 lbs full grown.
He can be seen on our Sires page, Pilgrim.

Just a sidenote   :    if we had to breed down the Toy Rat Terrier to get a smaller dog, how do you think we got smaller dogs, say a Mini Rat Terrier , from the Larger Rat Terriers.......

Jennifer,
I just wanted to let you know how great you have been from the initial phone call when I inquired about a Toy Rat Terrier until the day I picked her up and took her home. The decision to purchase a puppy from you was a great choice. I could tell the minute I first spoke to you. I was also extremely impressed by the way you puppies were cared for and trained. Jewel was already litter trained when I brought her home as well as crate trained, although she is a little princess and thinks a crate is a lovely place to sit upon. She had an easy time assimilating into our home with our other dog, Maverick as well. You are so knowledgeable and professional and were able to answer all my questions and were even available after I brought her home. I am so looking forward to another one of your puppies. My kids love her and are also very excited about  adding another 5280 puppy to our family. Thanks again for everything, I will never buy a puppy from anyone else again and highly recommend your kennel to anyone who is interested in a terrific toy breed!!!! I will send you some updated photos of our princess soon.

Bella Valentia

Hi Jennifer -

Tomorrow will be one year since I flew out to Denver to pick up Bella Valentina!!  A day I will always cherish as it was the day the most wonderful thing happened in my life - Bella.  I can't thank you enough for such a dear, sweet and loving bundle of joy.  Bella has captured many hearts!  As you know she goes to work with me four days a week and day care one day.  When she doesn't come to work the whole office is miserable!!  She makes everyones day brighter!  I have noticed on weeks that I am unable to bring her to the office she too seems down in the dumps.

I know that all the love and attention Bella receives has helped her develop into the dog that she is---too cute.  I also know that your breeding provided the core for her to develop as well as she has.  Her temperament and personality began with her breeding which allowed her to develop into the sweetheart that she is.

I could go on and on about how happy I am that Bella is in my life but I think you get it.  I would and do recommend you as a breeder and will continue.

Thank you again,

Sandra

Here's Wink. We love him. Jennifer is so sweet and knowledgeable and loves all these little puppies. I think that is so great how she cares about each of them individually. Wink has been such a special part of our lives we lost our family dog last summer and Wink has certainly been a wonderful blessing to our family. I honestly believe since he was brought up in an environment of love in Jennifer and her families home it is why he's such a sweet baby! Thank you. Take Care.

ASHTON

 Black/Tan Tuxedo male

Hey Jennifer,

I didn't want to bother you with another call.  I thought you'd like to know
how Ashton is doing.  We had a great first night!  We set up his pen like you had yours set up.  He saw his litter box, jumped in, rolled around and pooped.  We used the blanket in his kennel (cage/crate) and covered it with another blanket.  We had good play time in the back patio with our other dog Max.  They are still sniffing each other out.  He went to sleep easily and we never heard a peep from him all night.  This morning there were no accidents anywhere.  Couldn't ask for a better first night with a puppy.  Right now he's napping.

Thanks so much,
Cynthia

HERCULES

  Sable/White male 6 1/2 lbs

Thank you so much for the time and care you and your family put into breeding these dogs. Not only did you do the bare minimum, but it seems you went above and beyond what most breeders would be required to do in terms of training, health, cleanliness, and more. Hercules has an excellent temperament and he is great around my 8 year old child and other pets.

I am really happy with the services you provided. Having a dog mostly crate and litter box trained made it very easy for everyone to adapt. He also adapted to leash training very quickly. We thank you for allowing us to visit with Hercules on occasion, and for being extremely patient when we were not sure which dog to choose. We know we chose the right pet, and I believe you helped us with that decision. We also appreciate you assisting with questions and offering lower priced shots in the present and future. Thanks for everything, and I would highly recommend you as a toy rat terrier breeder.
